The World Cup did not produce one universal full-back system. It produced several different answers to the same problem: how do you create space when opponents are increasingly disciplined about defending the centre?
The modern full-back is often responsible for creating the space a winger attacks
The simplest version is still the overlap.
A winger moves inside. The full-back accelerates around the outside. The defender has to decide whether to follow the winger or protect the flank. Either decision can create a problem.
Algeria provided one of the clearest examples in their 3-3 draw with Austria. FIFA's tactical analysis found that Riyad Mahrez and Houssem Aouar moved into inside channels while Algeria's full-backs advanced high and wide. But Algeria did not simply overlap every time.
Their full-backs occasionally moved inside instead, while the wingers remained wide. The tactical value of an attacking full-back is not simply that he runs forward. It is that his movement changes the defensive picture around him.
Spain used full-backs as part of a larger positional structure
Spain's route to the title offered the most prominent example because their full-backs were integrated into a possession system built around positional manipulation.
The final against Argentina makes the point without requiring much interpretation.

The full-back was one of the moving pieces rather than a fixed outlet.
Full-backs also became inverted midfielders in possession
Going forward does not always mean going wide.
One of the clearest developments of modern positional play is the inverted full-back: a defender who moves into central or half-space positions when his team has the ball.
The advantage is structural. Instead of having the full-back occupy the same vertical lane as the winger, the full-back can move inside and give the midfield an additional passing option. The winger can then stay wide and pin the opposing full-back.

The underlying idea is straightforward: make defenders choose.
If the opposing full-back follows the winger, the inside player can receive. If a midfielder moves across to cover the inverted full-back, space may open elsewhere. If nobody follows, the full-back can progress the ball centrally.
This is why the modern full-back cannot be judged purely by traditional statistics such as crosses or tackles. His positioning can be valuable even when he never touches the ball in the final third.
The strongest teams used asymmetry rather than making both sides identical

England showed why full-back movement cannot be separated from the front line
England's tournament offered another illustration of the same principle, although through a different route.

That example is revealing because the full-back's role begins before the full-back even receives the ball.
When a winger stays wide, the opposition full-back is occupied. When the striker drops, a centre-back must decide whether to follow. When midfielders move to create space, the defensive block starts to stretch vertically and horizontally.
The full-back then operates within the space created by those movements.
This is the modern attacking chain: striker movement affects midfield positioning; midfield positioning affects the winger; the winger's position affects the opposing full-back; and that determines whether your own full-back can advance.
No single movement explains the attack.
The final proved that the old “full-back versus winger” relationship is no longer enough
The World Cup final provided the cleanest ending to the tactical story.
