At Zandvoort on August 23, Kimi Antonelli had the faster strategic card in his hands and still had to surrender second place to George Russell before Mercedes reversed the order.
Antonelli had stopped for fresh soft tyres under a Virtual Safety Car with 16 laps remaining. The move dropped him behind Russell, but it gave him a significant tyre advantage. At a circuit where overtaking is difficult, however, Mercedes could not simply assume that fresh rubber would translate into an immediate position gain. Antonelli eventually caught Russell, and the team instructed Russell to let his title-chasing team-mate through. (skysports.com)
That sequence captures something fundamental about Formula 1 strategy in 2026: the fastest tyre is not necessarily the most valuable tyre if it costs track position.
The new-generation cars have changed the tools available to drivers and strategists. Active aerodynamics, increased electrical deployment and the new Overtake Mode have altered how cars attack and defend. But the basic strategic problem remains familiar. A team has to decide whether the time gained from fresher tyres, cleaner air or a different stint length will outweigh the time lost by emerging behind another car.
The 2026 races so far provide unusually clear examples.
Track position can make the theoretically faster strategy the wrong one
Barcelona offered perhaps the cleanest example.
Lewis Hamilton started the Spanish Grand Prix on soft tyres while Mercedes' George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were on mediums. Ferrari's choice did not immediately produce the desired result. Hamilton could not take the lead from Russell at the start, so Ferrari brought him into the pits early and committed to a three-stop strategy.
Mercedes had a different problem. Ferrari's pace meant Russell could not create enough of a gap to cover Hamilton's extra stop while still maintaining control of the race. Mercedes therefore stayed with the two-stop plan because preserving track position remained valuable. (formula1.com)
The strategy almost worked.
Hamilton's third stop came under a Virtual Safety Car after Fernando Alonso retired. That effectively converted what would normally have been a costly pit stop into a much cheaper one. Hamilton returned to the circuit in the lead with fresh hard tyres and 24 laps remaining.
The final result was decisive: Hamilton won by 19.561 seconds over Russell, with Lando Norris third. (formula1.com)
The interesting part is not simply that Ferrari chose three stops and Mercedes chose two. It is why Mercedes stayed with the two-stop strategy.
A pit stop is not merely a tyre transaction. It is a position transaction. If a car pits and rejoins in traffic, the theoretical performance advantage of its new tyres can disappear while it spends laps trying to pass slower cars.
That calculation becomes particularly important on circuits where passing is difficult.
Zandvoort showed how hard it can be to buy track position back
The Dutch Grand Prix made this principle even more visible.
After the first red flag, Antonelli passed Norris at the restart and established himself at the front. Mercedes then used its strategy to protect that position, with the team later explaining that Antonelli built enough of a gap to prevent Norris from simply undercutting him. (formula1.com)
But Norris had superior pace.
When the McLaren eventually came through, Antonelli's position became increasingly vulnerable. Norris passed him into Turn 1 on Lap 52, then took the lead from Hamilton shortly afterwards. The subsequent Virtual Safety Car created another strategic split: Antonelli stopped for soft tyres while Norris stayed out. (formula1.com)
Antonelli eventually recovered second, but only after Mercedes managed the track-position problem created by his late stop.
Russell's role was especially revealing. Antonelli emerged behind his team-mate after the VSC stop, and Mercedes had to weigh two competing considerations: Russell's own podium position and Antonelli's substantially better tyre situation. At Zandvoort, the team did not want Antonelli spending several laps fighting Russell while faster Ferraris remained behind.

That is track position functioning as a strategic asset rather than merely a number on the timing tower.
The 2026 cars make the calculation more complicated, not less
There is a temptation to assume that overtaking improvements will make track position less important.
The 2026 regulations certainly give attacking drivers more tools.
The cars have active aerodynamics, with the front and rear wings changing configuration between straight-line and cornering conditions. The sport has also introduced Overtake Mode, replacing DRS as a dedicated overtaking aid. A driver who is within one second of the car ahead at the designated detection point can use the system on the following lap, with an additional 0.5 MJ of electrical energy available through the system. But those tools do not eliminate the value of position.
A driver still has to get close enough to qualify for Overtake Mode. The extra electrical performance is most useful on longer straights, and the defending driver has their own energy-management options. The 2026 regulations therefore create another strategic layer: being ahead can determine who controls the energy fight as well as who controls the racing line.
That matters because a driver defending second is not necessarily trying to be faster over the entire lap. They may be trying to remain close enough to a car ahead to gain access to Overtake Mode, while simultaneously keeping the car behind outside its most effective attacking window.
Strategy has consequently become a little less binary. It is no longer simply "pit early for fresh tyres" or "stay out for track position." Teams must consider where on the circuit the resulting gap will sit, how much electrical energy is available, and whether the following car can convert a tyre advantage into an actual pass.
A pit stop is valuable only if the time gained exceeds the position it costs
The classic undercut illustrates the problem.
A driver pits before a rival, receives fresh tyres and sets faster laps while the rival remains on older rubber. If the gap is small enough, the early-stopping driver can emerge ahead when the second car finally pits.
But an undercut has a price.
The driver who pits first loses the benefit of staying on track. They also have to complete the out-lap on cold or less-than-optimal tyres, depending on the tyre and conditions, while the rival continues at race pace.
If the pit stop places the driver behind traffic, the entire calculation changes.
This is why teams repeatedly talk about "covering" a rival. Mercedes' Barcelona strategy was exactly that. When Hamilton stopped early, Russell's team had to decide whether responding immediately would surrender too much track position. The team ultimately chose to retain the lead and commit to the two-stop strategy. (formula1.com)
Ferrari won because circumstances eventually changed the equation. The VSC gave Hamilton a cheap final stop, allowing him to keep the advantage he had earned through the alternative strategy.
Without that neutralisation, the outcome could have been much closer.
Monaco turns track position into an even bigger strategic currency
The principle becomes extreme at Monaco.
Fernando Alonso started the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix from 21st and finished 10th, scoring Aston Martin's first point of the season. The race featured two Safety Cars and a red flag, while only 15 cars finished. (formula1.com)
Monaco is an unusually severe test of track position because overtaking opportunities are limited. That changes the strategic value of a pit stop.
At many circuits, a team can accept rejoining a few places behind if the car has enough pace to recover them. Around Monaco, the same calculation is much less attractive. A faster car can spend lap after lap behind a slower competitor without finding a realistic passing opportunity.
That means a team may tolerate older tyres for longer than it would elsewhere, particularly if stopping would place the driver behind a group of cars.
The strategic objective becomes less about maximising tyre performance on each individual lap and more about controlling the sequence of cars the driver will encounter after the stop.
Tyre life matters because it determines how much track position is worth
The 2026 tyre environment has also made strategy highly circuit-dependent.
Pirelli has five dry compounds in its 2026 range, from C1 to C5, with three selected for each race. At Zandvoort, the allocation was C2 hard, C3 medium and C4 soft. (formula1.com)
The tyre itself changes the value of track position.
If degradation is high, a car on older tyres may lose enough performance that defending becomes impossible. In that situation, staying out simply to preserve position can be a false economy.
If degradation is limited, however, an older tyre can remain competitive enough to protect position while a rival wastes time fighting through traffic.
Zandvoort demonstrated the first scenario after the restart. Mercedes reported that tyre degradation became significant as the track conditions deteriorated, and teams moved away from the idea of completing the race on a single stop. The result was a wide variety of tyre strategies, including different approaches among the leading teams. (formula1.com)
The strategic question was therefore constantly changing: how long could a driver stay on a tyre before its loss of performance became greater than the positional advantage of remaining on track?
The best strategy is often the one that gives a team control over the next decision
This is the deeper reason track position matters.
Formula 1 strategy is not a sequence of isolated pit stops. Each decision changes the options available for the next one.
A driver in clean air can control pace. A driver ahead can force the car behind to spend energy attacking. A car that pits into traffic may lose several laps of potential tyre advantage. A car that stays out may gain track position but sacrifice tyre life.
The 2026 regulations add more variables, but they do not remove this basic strategic structure.
Hamilton's Barcelona victory came from a three-stop strategy that initially appeared to sacrifice position, then benefited enormously from a VSC. Norris's Zandvoort victory required him to recover from losing the lead at the restart, manage a changing tyre picture and ultimately use his pace advantage to take positions back on track. Antonelli's second place required Mercedes to protect his championship position after giving up track position for fresh tyres. (formula1.com)
That is why the phrase "track position" can be misleading if treated as simply the order of the cars.
In modern F1, it is closer to an option.
Being ahead gives a driver clean air, defensive control and, depending on the circuit and regulations, access to different energy and tyre-management possibilities. Giving up that position can be worthwhile, but only when the performance gained in return is large enough to buy it back.
The Dutch Grand Prix showed the limit clearly: Antonelli had fresher tyres and the pace to close on Russell, but at Zandvoort even that advantage did not guarantee an easy pass.
Mercedes had to intervene.
That remains the strategic reality of Formula 1 in 2026. A faster car can often recover lost track position. A faster car trapped behind another one may have no way to use its speed.
