The company has begun production at a high-volume manufacturing facility in Weirton, West Virginia, and started delivering its first commercial pilot system in Minnesota, with a broader project pipeline that’s been reported at over 75 gigawatt-hours of commercial agreements.
Why this made the list
The specific technical problem this solves is one lithium-ion batteries are genuinely bad at: most grid-scale lithium batteries are built for roughly four hours of discharge, which is useful for smoothing out short-term demand spikes but not for covering a multi-day gap in renewable generation — several cloudy, low-wind days in a row, for instance. Iron-air chemistry trades energy density for duration, allowing discharge across roughly 100 hours instead of four, which is a fundamentally different tool for a fundamentally different grid problem, not a marginal improvement on existing batteries.
The commercial signal worth noting: a major technology company committed roughly a billion dollars for a Form Energy system to support a data center’s power reliability in 2026, which reflects a real, large customer betting on the technology for a specific operational need — not a speculative pilot.
