A meaningful number of “facts” that stick from school science education turn out, on closer inspection, to be oversimplifications, outdated models, or in some cases outright myths that never had solid scientific backing in the first place, yet persist widely in public understanding regardless.
Humans do not only use 10% of their brains
This is one of the most persistent science myths in popular culture, and it’s directly contradicted by extensive brain imaging research — functional MRI studies consistently show activity distributed across virtually the entire brain over the course of a day, with even simple tasks engaging multiple regions simultaneously, and no legitimate neuroscience research has ever identified a genuinely unused 90% of brain tissue sitting dormant, waiting to be unlocked, despite the myth’s enduring popularity in fiction and self-help messaging.
The ‘five senses’ framework significantly understates human sensory perception
The commonly taught model of exactly five senses — sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch — is a considerable oversimplification that most neuroscientists and sensory researchers don’t actually use in their own work; the more accurate accounting includes additional distinct sensory systems such as proprioception (the sense of your body’s position and movement in space, without needing to look), the vestibular sense (balance and spatial orientation, centered in the inner ear), and thermoception and nociception (temperature and pain, increasingly understood as distinct sensory systems from basic touch) — bringing the more scientifically accurate count to somewhere well beyond five, depending on exactly how sensory systems are categorized.
A lot of ‘settled’ school science is really a simplified teaching model, not the actual state of scientific understanding — the two get conflated more often than most people realize.
Evolution doesn’t produce ‘more advanced’ organisms in a linear ladder
The common mental image of evolution as a linear progression toward increasingly “advanced” organisms, often depicted visually as a straight line from a simple ancestor to modern humans, is a significant misrepresentation of how evolutionary biologists actually understand the process — evolution produces organisms adapted to their specific environmental niche, not organisms progressing toward some objective standard of advancement, and a modern bacterium is, by relevant evolutionary and ecological measures, exactly as evolved and successfully adapted to its niche as any more visually complex organism, a distinction evolutionary biologists consider genuinely important and frequently misrepresented in casual popular science communication.
