The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Los Angeles on September 27, 2026, not September 6. Madonna enters the ceremony with 11 nominations, Taylor Swift follows with nine, and Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven each.

That nomination count does not automatically tell us who will leave Los Angeles with the most Moon Persons.

The VMAs are split between categories with different voting mechanisms, and the biggest awards can produce results that look less like a simple nomination-count race than a contest between fan mobilization, commercial momentum and the particular videos MTV has decided represent the year. Fan voting is open in 13 categories through September 25, while Best New Artist voting continues into the show itself.

So the better question is not simply who has the most nominations. It is which nominees are positioned to convert those nominations into wins.

Madonna is the nomination leader, and that makes her impossible to ignore

Madonna leads the 2026 VMAs with 11 nominations, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. Her “Confessions II – The Film” is nominated across an unusually broad range of categories, including Best Dance, Direction, Art Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Choreography and Visual Effects.

That breadth matters.

A nominee concentrated in one or two major categories can have a huge night without dominating the overall trophy count. Madonna, by contrast, has multiple paths to winning. “Confessions II – The Film” appears repeatedly across the technical and creative categories, which means the same project could potentially generate several victories.

There is also the historical angle. Madonna already has 19 competitive VMA wins, according to Paramount's nomination announcement. A major winning night would add another chapter to a relationship with the VMAs that stretches back decades.

Prediction: Madonna is the strongest candidate to win multiple awards overall. Her nomination total is not itself proof that she will sweep, but no other nominee enters with as many opportunities.

Taylor Swift may have the strongest case in the biggest categories

If Madonna is the nomination leader, Taylor Swift is arguably the most obvious challenger for the night's historical storyline.

Swift has nine nominations, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Pop. “The Fate of Ophelia” is also nominated in Art Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Choreography and Visual Effects.

The key fact is that one win would have historic significance. CBS News and the Associated Press reported that Swift has 30 VMA wins, tied with Beyoncé, meaning another victory would make her the most-awarded artist in VMA history.

That does not guarantee a trophy. Awards shows do not operate as scheduled coronations.

But Swift has something few nominees possess: a massive, highly organized fan base combined with nominations in both marquee and technical categories. If fan voting becomes decisive in the categories where she is eligible, she is difficult to dismiss.

Prediction: Taylor Swift is the favorite for at least one major win and a serious contender for Video of the Year or Artist of the Year.

The bigger uncertainty is whether the 2026 VMAs want the defining story to be Swift setting a new all-time record or Madonna extending her own extraordinary VMA legacy.

Video of the Year looks like the night's most interesting race

The six nominees for Video of the Year are:

  • Ariana Grande, “hate that i made you love me”
  • Bruno Mars, “I Just Might”
  • GENER8ION, “STORM starring Yung Lean”
  • Madonna, “Confessions II – The Film”
  • Sabrina Carpenter, “Tears”
  • Taylor Swift, “The Fate of Ophelia”

This is not a category with an obvious outsider field. Four of the six entries belong to artists also nominated for Artist of the Year, while Madonna's and Swift's videos dominate multiple technical categories.

My early favorite is Taylor Swift's “The Fate of Ophelia,” with Madonna's “Confessions II – The Film” as the strongest alternative.

That prediction is based less on nomination mathematics than on the shape of the field. Swift combines broad category support with enormous fan engagement, while Madonna's video has the widest creative-category recognition of any Video of the Year nominee.

Ariana Grande should not be overlooked, however. Her “hate that i made you love me” received nominations for Video of the Year, Best Pop, Direction, Cinematography, Editing and Visual Effects, giving it a strong overall creative profile.

If there is a winner outside the Madonna-Swift narrative, Grande is probably the most plausible one.

Artist of the Year could become Madonna versus Taylor Swift

The Artist of the Year nominees are Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Madonna, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift.

This category is where nomination totals become less useful.

Madonna has the most nominations. Swift has the historical-record storyline. Grande and Carpenter both have seven nominations, making either capable of emerging as the night's broader breakthrough. Bruno Mars also has five nominations and is represented in Video of the Year and Best R&B.

Morgan Wallen is the unusual case in this group because his nomination profile is narrower than several competitors, but Artist of the Year is not simply an award for whoever collected the most nominations elsewhere.

Prediction: Taylor Swift has the slight edge, with Madonna close behind.

That is a cautious prediction, not a settled one. If the night develops into a Madonna celebration, Artist of the Year would be the clearest place for that to happen. If it becomes a record-breaking Swift night, the category becomes even more important.

Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande could be the spoilers

Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each received seven nominations, putting them behind only Madonna and Swift in the overall count.

Carpenter's nominations are especially interesting because they are spread across “Tears,” “House Tour” and her collaboration with Madonna, “Bring Your Love.” She is nominated for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Collaboration, Best Direction and Best Editing.

Grande's “hate that i made you love me,” meanwhile, appears repeatedly in the creative categories.

Neither artist should be treated merely as a supporting player in a Madonna-versus-Swift race.

Prediction: Ariana Grande is the stronger technical-category threat, while Sabrina Carpenter has a credible path to a major fan-facing win.

A split night is entirely possible. Awards may be distributed widely enough that the eventual headline is not “one artist swept” but “several pop stars divided the major prizes.”

Song of the Year has the most unpredictable shortlist

Song of the Year includes BTS' “Swim,” Ella Langley's “Choosin' Texas,” HUNTR/X's “Golden,” Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter's “Bring Your Love,” Olivia Dean's “Man I Need,” PinkPantheress' “Stateside + Zara Larsson,” and RAYE's “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”

This is perhaps the hardest major category to predict because it brings together very different audiences and musical worlds.

BTS brings one of the most formidable fan communities represented anywhere on the ballot. Madonna and Carpenter combine two major VMA names on one nomination. PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson's collaboration appears in multiple categories, while Olivia Dean and RAYE represent major contemporary contenders with distinct critical and commercial momentum.

Early prediction: BTS has the fan-power advantage, but “Bring Your Love” and “Stateside + Zara Larsson” are serious challengers.

Unlike a technical category, Song of the Year can become a direct test of which audience turns enthusiasm into votes.

Best New Artist may be the category most likely to surprise

The Best New Artist nominees are Bella Kay, CORTIS, Magnus Ferrell, Malcolm Todd, Myles Smith, Sienna Spiro and Stella Lefty. Voting in the category remains open into the night of the VMAs, making it particularly sensitive to late fan mobilization.

CORTIS enters with another nomination in Best K-Pop, while Stella Lefty is also nominated for Best Country. That additional visibility could matter, although the official nomination list does not establish a favorite by itself.

Prediction: This is the category where a confident pre-show forecast is least reliable. The extended voting window means momentum can change closer to the ceremony.

The return of Best Dance could produce another Madonna moment

Best Dance returns after seven years away from the VMAs, and Madonna is immediately one of the nominees for “Confessions II – The Film.” Her competition includes Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Doechii, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson, Tate McRae, Bebe Rexha and Faithless, and Slayyyter.

This is one of Madonna's strongest opportunities because the category's return creates a natural spotlight around a nominee whose project is already deeply embedded across the 2026 ballot.

But Tate McRae and PinkPantheress are also compelling contenders in a category where contemporary dance-focused pop could matter enormously.

Prediction: Madonna enters as the early favorite, but Tate McRae is the most obvious challenger.

My early picks for the biggest 2026 VMA awards

With the ceremony still weeks away, these are predictions rather than claims about what will happen:

  • Video of the Year: Taylor Swift, “The Fate of Ophelia”
  • Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift
  • Song of the Year: BTS, “Swim”
  • Best New Artist: Too close to call
  • Most awards overall: Madonna
  • Most likely spoiler in the major categories: Ariana Grande

The 2026 VMAs have set up an unusually clear central tension. Madonna has the most nominations. Taylor Swift has the chance to move beyond Beyoncé and become the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have enough nominations to disrupt both narratives.

That makes September 27 more interesting than a simple prediction exercise. The winners will decide which story the 2026 VMAs actually belong to.
