Start with what dry means
In wine, dry means low residual sugar. Yeast ferments grape sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide; if fermentation consumes nearly all the sugar, the wine is dry. A wine can still taste fruity or seem dry because of acidity and aroma, so the clue may point to a grape that is often made dry rather than a wine with zero sugar.
Check the answer length and crossings
Count the squares first. Then use filled crossing letters. A six-letter slot with E as the third letter is not going to be RIESLING, but a slot ending in -BLANC may point to SAUVIGNON BLANC. If the clue says ‘dry red wine’ or names a region, treat that as a filter rather than a suggestion.
Common dry wine answers
- RIESLING (8 letters): Often dry in Alsace and in German bottles labeled Trocken. High acidity, citrus, stone fruit, and sometimes a petrol note.
- SAUVIGNON BLANC (14 letters): Usually dry and crisp, with grapefruit, passionfruit, and grassy notes. Loire Valley and New Zealand are common reference points.
- CHARDONNAY (10 letters): Made in dry styles, especially unoaked or Chablis. Oaked versions can taste richer but are not necessarily sweet.
- PINOT GRIGIO (11 letters) or PINOT GRIS (9 letters): Often dry, light, and citrusy, especially Italian Pinot Grigio.
- CABERNET SAUVIGNON (17 letters): A dry red; in rose form it can answer a dry rose clue. Check the letter count before committing.
- SEC (3 letters) and BRUT (4 letters): Short crossword answers tied to dry wine language. SEC is French for dry; BRUT describes dry sparkling wine.
Use region clues as filters
If the clue mentions Chablis, think Chardonnay. If it mentions Sancerre or Loire Valley, think Sauvignon Blanc. If it mentions Bordeaux or Chianti, think dry red blends or Sangiovese-based red. Region clues are usually there to narrow the grape or style, not to send you to a wine list.
Eliminate by letter count first
Crossword answers usually omit spaces and accents. SAUVIGNON BLANC is 14 letters in the grid, not 15. CABERNET SAUVIGNON is 17. PINOT GRIS is 9, while PINOT GRIGIO is 11. If the grid gives you a short slot, look for SEC or BRUT before trying a full grape name.
Watch for trick clues
Dry can also mean lacking moisture or humor, but in a wine clue the setter usually wants a wine term. If the obvious grape does not fit the crossings, test the short wine words and the region names. A well-informed guess is fine once the letter count and crossings have ruled out the impossible answers.

FAQ
What if the clue says dry red wine?
Try CABERNET SAUVIGNON, BORDEAUX, or CHIANTI if the letter count allows. For a dry rose, CABERNET SAUVIGNON ROSE can fit a long slot, but check the crossings first.
Does a region name always point to one grape?
No. Chablis is Chardonnay and Sancerre is Sauvignon Blanc, but Bordeaux is a blend and Chianti is Sangiovese-based. Use the region as a narrowing clue, then confirm with the grid.
Can a dry wine answer be a short word?
Yes. SEC and BRUT are common short wine terms. If the grid has three or four squares, start there before testing a long grape name.
