IBC returns to RAI Amsterdam from September 11 to 14, 2026, with a programme that makes one thing unusually clear: the media industry's AI conversation has moved beyond asking whether artificial intelligence belongs in the workflow.
The harder question is where it belongs.
IBC2026's official programme points toward AI agents, cloud-native production, content provenance, next-generation streaming, immersive media, private 5G and cybersecurity. But the most interesting technology expected at the show is not necessarily the technology with the most impressive demo. It is the technology being pushed into the awkward, expensive, repetitive parts of media operations where broadcasters, studios and streaming companies actually need it to work.
That distinction matters. IBC has long been a place where the industry's future arrives in prototype form alongside equipment and software that have to survive Monday morning in a real production environment. The technologies taking shape at IBC 2026 suggest that media companies are increasingly looking for systems that connect production, archives, distribution and audiences rather than isolated AI tools that solve one flashy problem.
AI agents are moving from experiments into media workflows
AI will be everywhere at IBC2026, but the official programme is already framing the discussion around application rather than novelty.
The Showcase Theatre includes sessions on AI's real impact on media and entertainment, while IBC's broader programme asks directly where AI can make a practical difference and distinguishes between predictive, generative and agentic AI. More than 600 speakers are scheduled across the showfloor programme, with AI among the most prominent subjects.
Agentic AI is particularly worth watching because it represents a shift from using AI as a tool that produces an output to using AI systems that can participate in a sequence of tasks.
IBC's own 2026 Accelerator programme offers a concrete example. One project, FRAMES, short for Federated Retrieval, Agentic Media Environment and Software Defined Workflows, is exploring how broadcaster archives, creative teams and AI agents can work together to speed up pre-production through intelligent discovery and multimodal collaboration. Another project focused on live sports is examining agentic orchestration for real-time personalisation and content adaptation.
Those projects are still innovation work, not proof that autonomous media workflows are ready to replace human production teams. That distinction should be kept clear. But IBC's emphasis suggests that the next phase of media AI will be less about generating a single image or script and more about coordinating research, logging, rights information, metadata, editing tasks and distribution decisions.
The useful question at IBC will not be, "Can AI do this?"
It will be, "Can this AI system plug into everything else we already use?"
Cloud production is becoming infrastructure, not a separate destination
For years, the broadcast industry's move to the cloud was often discussed as a migration project. At IBC 2026, the more important story appears to be what happens when cloud infrastructure becomes part of ordinary production architecture.
IBC has explicitly identified cloud-native workflows as a major area of focus, while its confirmed exhibitor base includes major cloud and infrastructure companies alongside established broadcast technology manufacturers.
The shift is visible in the kinds of workflows being discussed. Cisco, for example, is scheduled to present a session on combining AI workloads and media networking, describing containerised media and AI applications operating alongside traditional ST 2110 media flows. The session also focuses on moving AI capabilities closer to live environments through edge infrastructure.
That may sound deeply technical, because it is. But the commercial implication is simpler.
Media companies increasingly want production systems that can move workloads depending on where capacity is available and where latency allows. Some processes belong in central cloud infrastructure. Others need to happen close to the camera, venue or live audience.
The next generation of cloud media architecture is likely to be defined less by the question of whether a workflow is "in the cloud" and more by how intelligently work can move between cloud, facility and edge systems.
Content authenticity is becoming a technical problem that media companies cannot ignore
AI-generated and AI-modified media has made provenance a much more urgent part of the technology conversation.
IBC2026 explicitly lists content provenance among its focus areas, while the show's content programme includes security, authenticity and provenance under its Transformative Tech pillar. The technical paper programme also includes a dedicated Trust & Provenance focus.
That is significant because provenance technology can easily sound like a compliance feature until something goes wrong.
For news organisations, it increasingly intersects with verification. For entertainment companies, it may affect how synthetic media is identified and managed. For advertisers and platforms, questions about origin and alteration can affect brand safety and audience trust.
IBC's Q-Stream Accelerator project takes the issue into live infrastructure. The proof-of-concept project combines predictive AI orchestration, semantic video compression and hybrid quantum-secure authentication in an attempt to maintain trusted live broadcasts in difficult network environments.
That project should not be mistaken for a finished industry standard. It is explicitly a proof of concept. But it illustrates how trust is moving deeper into media infrastructure itself.
The future problem is not simply whether audiences can spot a fake video. Media companies may increasingly need technical systems capable of recording where content came from, how it changed and whether its journey through a production and distribution chain can be trusted.
Streaming technology is being built for more than the television screen
IBC's Content Everywhere feature returns in Hall 5 with a focus on areas including AdTech, cloud services, telecommunications, esports and gaming, OTT and streaming, piracy and cybersecurity, and sports streaming. The feature is expected to include nearly 200 exhibitors and two stages dedicated to digital content delivery and monetisation.
The phrase "content everywhere" has been industry vocabulary for years, but the technical challenge has become more complicated.
Media companies are no longer merely trying to deliver the same programme to multiple devices. They are dealing with different formats, live and on-demand consumption, personalised interfaces, advertising systems, sports rights, creator platforms and increasingly fragmented audiences.
That is why technology around metadata, audience intelligence and automated adaptation is likely to matter as much as raw streaming capacity.
The IBC Accelerator programme's work on AI-powered live media personalisation points toward this direction. The goal is not simply to stream an event reliably but to adapt content and potentially create new ways to monetise live programming.
The future of streaming may therefore look less like a bigger version of television distribution and more like a software layer continuously adapting media for different audiences and contexts.
Private 5G and edge computing are moving closer to live production
Wireless production has always faced an uncomfortable limitation: the more crowded and demanding the environment, the harder it can be to guarantee the performance needed for professional video.
IBC's Network Control Accelerator project is exploring open 5G network APIs that could dynamically prioritise broadcast devices in congested environments, with the aim of maintaining reliable, high-quality wireless video feeds.
That is one of the more concrete examples of a broader trend expected at IBC: network technology becoming part of the production workflow rather than simply the pipe carrying media from one place to another.
Private 5G is also among the technologies specifically highlighted by IBC for the 2026 show.
If the technology matures as the industry expects, the implications could be substantial for sports, news gathering, live events and remote production. More cameras and production tools could operate wirelessly while systems make smarter decisions about which connections need priority.
But deployment remains the key issue. A convincing demonstration at a trade show is not the same as operating reliably in a packed stadium or during a major breaking-news event. That gap between prototype and deployment is exactly why IBC's collaborative Accelerator projects may be more revealing than polished product demonstrations.
Virtual production is expanding from the screen to the production plan
Virtual production remains part of the broader IBC technology landscape, but the interesting development in 2026 is the possibility of using digital environments before production even begins.
IBC's VooPla Accelerator project is exploring production-accurate digital twins of broadcast and virtual production studios. The idea is to help commissioners and production teams assess technical feasibility, costs and sustainability impacts earlier in the process.
That is a different proposition from simply putting actors in front of LED walls.
A digital twin of a production environment could potentially become a planning tool: a way to test equipment layouts, technical requirements and production choices before committing time and money to a physical setup.
Whether those systems become widely adopted will depend on accuracy and cost. A digital twin that requires extensive specialist work to build may not make economic sense for every production. But for complex studios and repeatable production environments, the logic is straightforward: discovering an expensive technical problem before the crew arrives is better than discovering it after.
IBC 2026 may reveal which media technologies are ready to leave the lab
The most revealing part of IBC 2026 may not be the biggest announcement.
It may be the technology that quietly appears across multiple parts of the show.
IBC's Future Tech area in Hall 14 is explicitly positioned around moving ideas from concept toward real-world application, while its Accelerator programme connects broadcasters and media companies including the BBC, NBCUniversal, DAZN, ITV, Channel 4, Associated Press, Sky and Al Jazeera with technology partners on industry-led projects.
That is the tension defining the future of media technology right now.
AI can generate astonishing outputs, but media companies need systems that can handle rights, archives, deadlines, live feeds and human oversight. Cloud infrastructure can scale, but production teams need predictable workflows. Personalisation can create new products, but audiences still need to trust what they see.
IBC 2026 is unlikely to settle those questions in four days in Amsterdam.
What it can show is which technologies are beginning to survive contact with the real media business.
