Scientists estimate there may be between 700,000 and 1 million species living in the ocean, counting mostly animals and excluding the millions of microorganism species that also exist there — a genuinely staggering number given how little of the ocean has actually been surveyed.
Mapping the seafloor and exploring it are two completely different tasks
It’s worth being precise about a distinction most ocean coverage blurs together: “mapped” and “explored” mean genuinely different things. A little over a quarter of the ocean has been mapped at high resolution — meaning its general depth and shape have been measured, typically by sonar from a ship passing overhead. Actual visual exploration, where humans or cameras have directly observed the seafloor, covers a tiny fraction of even that mapped quarter. A region can be fully mapped in terms of depth and topography while remaining completely unexplored in terms of what’s actually living or happening down there — the difference between having a photograph of a house’s roofline from a satellite and having actually walked through its rooms.
Why the ocean stays this unexplored, in real practical terms
The barrier isn’t a lack of curiosity — it’s cost and physics. Manned or robotic vehicles capable of surviving deep-ocean pressure are expensive to build, operate, and maintain, and every hour of deep-sea exploration time costs vastly more than equivalent time studying accessible terrestrial or shallow-water environments. That’s the real, unglamorous reason humanity has mapped more of the surface of Mars and the Moon in useful detail than it has mapped and explored its own ocean floor — space telescopes and orbiters can survey enormous areas relatively cheaply, while deep-ocean exploration requires physically sending a vessel through the same crushing pressure zones the Mariana Trench is famous for, one small patch of seafloor at a time.
Why this matters more than trivia
The honest takeaway from real ocean data isn’t a list of impressive numbers — it’s that Earth’s single largest habitat remains, by any reasonable measure, still almost entirely unexplored. Every “surprising ocean fact” ultimately traces back to that one number: less than 0.001% of the deep seafloor has ever actually been seen by human eyes.
