Joseph James DeAngelo terrorized California for twelve years as the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker before investigators realized, in the early 2000s, that both were the same offender — and gave him the name the case is now known by: the Golden State Killer. He killed at least 13 people and raped more than 50 between 1974 and 1986, and he did it while spending part of that same period working as a sworn police officer. He evaded identification for over four decades, until a genealogy technique built for hobbyists tracing their family trees found him through relatives who had never heard of him and had no idea their own DNA would ever be used this way.

A former police officer, hiding among the people investigating him

DeAngelo served as a police officer at the Exeter Police Department from May 1973 to August 1976, then at the Auburn Police Department from 1976 to 1979 — meaning part of his known offending window overlapped directly with his time in law enforcement. He was fired from the Auburn force in 1979 after being caught shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a Citrus Heights drugstore, a small, almost mundane offense compared to what investigators would eventually connect him to. According to later reporting, his attacks didn’t slow down after losing the badge — if anything, they appeared to escalate.

By the time his known offending ended in 1986, DeAngelo had built one of the most extensive documented crime records of any modern American serial offender: prosecutors with the Orange County District Attorney’s office later documented him admitting to harming 87 victims across 53 separate crimes spanning 11 California counties, a scale of offending that stayed functionally invisible to investigators as a single connected pattern for decades, spread as it was across so many separate jurisdictions.

How a technique built for family trees caught him

What actually ended the case wasn’t a tip, a confession, or a database match to DeAngelo’s own DNA — his DNA had never been in any law enforcement database. Investigators, working with Contra Costa County investigator Paul Holes and forensic genetic genealogist Barbara Rae-Venter, took a DNA profile extracted from decades-old crime-scene evidence and uploaded it to GEDmatch, an open-source genealogy platform where ordinary people upload their consumer-ancestry DNA results to find relatives and build family trees.

The crime-scene profile didn’t match DeAngelo directly — it matched distant relatives, third and fourth cousins, who had uploaded their own DNA years earlier purely to research their own family history, with no connection to the case and no idea their genetic data would ever intersect with a criminal investigation. From those distant matches, investigators built out an increasingly detailed family tree, cross-referencing it against public records — age, location, gender — to narrow an enormous pool of possible relatives down to a small handful of candidates, and eventually to one: Joseph James DeAngelo. Investigators then covertly collected DNA he had discarded to confirm the match before moving on an arrest. He was taken into custody on April 24, 2018, in Citrus Heights — the same area where his firing incident had happened decades earlier.

The counterintuitive part most retellings skip

The detail that surprises most people who learn the real story: DeAngelo was never in a DNA database himself. The people whose genetic data actually broke the case open were innocent, distantly related strangers who had submitted their own DNA to a hobbyist genealogy site for entirely unrelated reasons — some of them probably still don’t know their ancestry results played any role in identifying a serial killer. That’s a structurally different kind of forensic breakthrough than a fingerprint match or a direct DNA hit: it depended on the genetic data of people who committed no crime and had never been asked whether their information could be used this way.

The legal resolution

DeAngelo pleaded guilty in June 2020 to 13 counts of murder and 13 kidnapping-related charges, a plea agreement that avoided the death penalty. His sentencing hearing, held August 17–21, 2020, included days of victim impact statements from survivors and victims’ families. In court, he offered a brief statement: “I’ve listened to all your statements. Each one of them. And I’m truly sorry to everyone I’ve hurt.” He was sentenced to 11 consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, plus additional life terms with parole eligibility and further sentencing enhancements — a sentence structured to ensure he would never be released.

The real ethical debate the case triggered

DeAngelo’s capture didn’t end the story for genetic privacy researchers and civil liberties groups — it started a genuinely unresolved debate that continues today. Bioethicists writing in journals including Nature, along with organizations like the ACLU, raised a real, substantive objection: crime-scene DNA was uploaded to a platform built and marketed for consumer genealogy research, matched against the genetic data of people who had never consented to their information being used for law enforcement purposes, and who were not suspects in anything. GEDmatch’s own terms of service at the time didn’t clearly anticipate this use. In direct response, GEDmatch changed its policy to require users to explicitly opt in before their data could be used for law enforcement matching — a real, structural change to how the platform operates, made specifically because of how the Golden State Killer case unfolded.

What the technique has done since

The method that caught DeAngelo — now generally called investigative genetic genealogy — didn’t stay a one-time novelty. Tracking by genealogy researchers found that, as of late 2023, the technique had contributed to solving roughly 651 cases in total: about 318 living perpetrators identified, and 464 previously unidentified deceased people finally named, a substantial number of them cold cases that had sat unsolved for decades before this approach existed. It’s now a real, established part of modern cold-case investigation — directly traceable back to the same technique that identified DeAngelo.

The honest takeaway

The Golden State Killer case is genuinely remarkable as an investigative story — a four-decade cold case broken open by a technique nobody involved in the original 1970s investigations could have imagined. But the honest version of that story includes a real, still-unsettled ethical question: the break came from the genetic data of people who did nothing wrong and never agreed to be part of a criminal investigation. That tension — between a technique that has since helped identify hundreds of real offenders and named hundreds of previously unknown victims, and the genuine privacy questions it raises for everyone who’s ever uploaded their DNA for an entirely different reason — hasn’t gone away just because this one case ended in a conviction.
