Car maintenance advice is full of rules that were genuinely true decades ago and have simply never been updated in the public consciousness, alongside some real, still-valid guidance that gets ignored because it’s inconvenient. Sorting the two out saves real money.
The 3,000-mile oil change is mostly outdated
The “change your oil every 3,000 miles” rule dates to an era of less advanced motor oil and engine tolerances. Most modern vehicles, using full synthetic oil, have manufacturer-specified intervals of 7,500 to 10,000 miles or more, and many newer cars include oil-life monitoring systems that track actual driving conditions (not just mileage) to give a more accurate recommendation than any fixed number can. Sticking to the old 3,000-mile habit isn’t harmful, but it’s a real, ongoing unnecessary expense for most modern vehicles — the owner’s manual’s actual specified interval is the more accurate guide.
Premium fuel for a regular-fuel engine is close to pure waste
Unless a manufacturer specifically requires premium fuel (check the owner’s manual, not the pump), using it in an engine designed for regular fuel provides no measurable performance or efficiency benefit — the higher octane rating exists specifically to prevent engine knock in high-compression engines designed to use it, and has no functional benefit in an engine that wasn’t designed around that requirement. This is one of the more persistent and financially costly car myths, given the meaningful price gap between regular and premium at most stations.
Where the old advice is still genuinely right
Replacing tires in pairs (or ideally all four at once) rather than one at a time remains solid advice, not marketing — mismatched tread depth between tires on the same axle, or between front and rear on many all-wheel-drive systems specifically, can cause real handling instability and, on some AWD systems, mechanical stress on the drivetrain from the mismatched rotation speeds. Similarly, the advice to warm up a car briefly before hard driving in cold weather remains genuinely valid for older vehicles with carburetors, though it matters much less for modern fuel-injected engines, which reach optimal operating temperature through normal gentle driving almost as effectively as idling.
The pattern behind most outdated car advice: it was true for the cars of a previous generation, and nobody updated the folk wisdom when the engineering changed.
The single most reliable source of truth for any specific vehicle remains the manufacturer’s owner’s manual — general car advice, including the corrections in this article, is a reasonable starting point, but manufacturer specifications for a specific engine and drivetrain combination will always be more accurate than generalized rules.
