Understanding what they are — and how fragile some of them genuinely are — reframes a lot of otherwise confusing international news.
Shipping lanes carry more weight than most people realize
Roughly a fifth of global maritime oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint narrow enough that a handful of disabled vessels could meaningfully constrict it. The Suez Canal, connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, handles a similarly outsized share of trade between Europe and Asia — a fact the world relearned abruptly when a single grounded container ship blocked the canal for six days in 2021 and delayed an estimated $9 billion a day in trade. These chokepoints matter because there’s usually no fast alternative route: going around them means weeks of extra sailing time, not a same-day reroute.
The internet runs on cables at the bottom of the ocean
Roughly 95% of intercontinental internet and data traffic travels through undersea fiber-optic cables, not satellites, which is a fact that surprises most people. There are only a few hundred of these cables globally, and damage to just one — whether from a ship’s anchor, an earthquake, or deliberate sabotage — can measurably degrade internet connectivity across an entire region until it’s repaired, which typically takes days to weeks depending on depth and weather.
Ports are more concentrated than the shipping industry likes to admit
A relatively small number of “mega-ports” — Shanghai, Singapore, Rotterdam, Los Angeles/Long Beach among them — handle a disproportionate share of global container volume, which is why a labor dispute, software outage, or COVID-era congestion at any single one of them produces supply chain effects felt in stores on the other side of the world months later.
The global economy looks robust and distributed from a distance. Up close, it runs through a surprisingly small number of physical points that were never designed with redundancy as the priority.
None of this is really a story about fragility for its own sake — it’s a useful lens for reading the news. When a headline mentions tension near a strait, a damaged cable, or port congestion, the honest read is rarely “this is a minor local issue.” It’s usually closer to “this is one of the few places where a local problem becomes a global one.”
