Basketball’s visual style has changed dramatically over the past fifteen years — dramatically more three-point attempts, fewer long two-point jump shots, and an overall shift toward what looks, to longtime fans, like a fundamentally different game. The cause isn’t a rule change or a shift in player talent. It’s analytics departments doing simple expected-value math and teams gradually, then rapidly, acting on the results.
The math behind the three-point revolution
A three-point shot made at roughly 35% — a perfectly ordinary, unremarkable shooting percentage for a competent shooter — produces a higher expected point value per attempt than a long two-point jump shot made at 40%, once you multiply out the points per shot across a full season of attempts. Once front offices and coaching staffs internalized this straightforward arithmetic, the long midrange jump shot — for decades considered a fundamental, respected part of a well-rounded offensive game — was gradually identified as the least efficient shot on the floor for most players, and team shot selection shifted accordingly, sometimes over the objection of coaches and commentators steeped in an earlier era’s aesthetic preferences.
Defense had to adapt too
The offensive shift forced a parallel defensive evolution: help defense and rim protection strategies had to be recalibrated around preventing efficient three-point looks and shots at the rim (the other genuinely high-value shot location) while conceding more midrange looks, since defending the least efficient shot on the floor is, mathematically, a poor use of defensive resources relative to the higher-value alternatives.
The NBA didn’t get more three-point-heavy because players got better at shooting from distance. It got more three-point-heavy because someone did the arithmetic and every team eventually had to follow or fall behind.
What this means for how the game is coached and drafted
The practical effect has reached deep into player development and draft evaluation — young players are now coached toward three-point shooting proficiency earlier and more deliberately than in previous eras, and draft evaluation increasingly weights three-point shooting ability and efficiency metrics that simply weren’t tracked or valued with the same rigor a generation ago, a structural shift in how the sport develops talent that traces directly back to the same underlying expected-value math that changed shot selection at the professional level.
